What is the difference between Premarital Counseling and Couples Counseling?

Premarital counseling is a form of therapy that helps couples prepare for marriage. It is a skills based therapy focused on teaching conflict resolution, problem solving, financial management, and various other skills. It is a proactive approach to foster communication and strengthen connection prior to marriage.

Couples counseling is a form of therapy focusing on couple distress. The therapist will work with the couple to address issues within the relationship such as conflict management, intimacy, trust, and commitment.

Please note, if you would like to submit a superbill to your insurance company, most insurance plans do not cover pre-marital counseling. In addition, some insurance policies do not cover couple or family counseling. Please check with your insurance to determine if your plan includes *couple and family therapy.

*If your policy covers couples or family therapy, one or both individuals must meet medical necessity requirements which your provider will determine after the intake assessment.
